Punxsutawney Phil groundhog predicted spring is comin

People believe a legend. Each year, on February 2, thousands of people gather in the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, expecting the famous groundhog to predict when the spring will come.

This time, on Sunday morning,  Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow which means it will be an early spring. The announcement was made in a festive atmosphere of music and food. The date of Phil's prognostication is known as Groundhog Day in the United States and Canada. 2020 marks the 134th time the event has occurred. Since 1887, Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter more than 100 times. According the legendary practice, the President of the Inner Circle is the only person able to „understand” Groundhogese through his possession of an ancient acacia wood cane. Then he interprets Phil's message, to be presented to the crowd.

According to the tradition there is only one Phil, and all other groundhogs are impostors. Phil and the town of Punxsutawney were portrayed in the 1993 film Groundhog Day, an American fantasy film directed by Harold Ramis. In 2016, Punxsutawney Phil was again a character in the Broadway musical version of the 1993 movie. On March 21, 2018, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in Pennsylvania issued a symbolic arrest warrant for Punxsutawney Phil for deception, citing that winter was only supposed to last six more weeks but the county suffered a snowstorm on the second day of spring.
