Four dead after a truck chase followed a robbery at a jewerly store

After a robbery at Regent Jewelers at 386 Mile in in Coral Gables, on late Thursday afternoon, when shots were fired and a woman was shot in the head at the jewelry store, the robbers hijacked an UPS truck and fled taking the delivery driver with them.

It was a high-speed chase. The UPS truck made its way up Interstate 75 followed by dozens of police cars. The chase ended when the truck got behind several vehicles at a crowded intersection, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of where the incident began. More shots were exchanged between law enforcement and the robbers in Miramar. Both robbers were shot and killed. The UPS driver was also dead. The fourth victim was in a nearby vehicle when shots rang out in intersection. A bullet hit a window at Coral Gables’ City Hall, which was locked down. No law enforcement had been killed.

The episode was broadcast live on TV, filmed by news helicopters. Hours after the chase ended, medical gauze, wrappers and other debris remained strewn across the Miramar roadway's middle lane, next to the truck. The FBI is leading the investigation. „We extend our condolences to the family and friends of our employee and the other innocent victims involved in this incident,” UPS said in astatement.
