The Jackson State University was on lockdown

Jackson State University was on lockdown Wednesday after a shooting was reported near campus in the afternoon, on the 1100 block of Lynch Street.

University spokesman L.A. Warren said the victim, who was not a student, was shot in the leg near the corner of Dalton and Cleary streets. The victim was in a parking lot at the time of the shooting.  There was just a single shooter, who was also not a student. The suspected shooter was said to be in a black Honda Accord with the license plate number MAC 0214. No description of that person was available. The victim was injured and transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The lockdown was lifted about 30 minutes later when school officials said there is no longer a threat of an active shooter on campus.


Jackson State is a public, historically black university with an enrollment of about 7,000  students. The most popular areas of study within the 90-plus undergraduate and graduate degree programs are business, education, STEM, and interdisciplinary studies. Jackson State University reported 135 safety-related incidents involving students on or near campus or other Jackson State affiliated properties in 2018.
