Winds, fires and power outages in California

Some 180,000 people are being asked to leave their homes in Northern California as the Kincade Fire threatens the city of Santa Rosa.

The Sheriff's Office appreciated this is the largest ever evacuation in the area. „If you are still in town, LEAVE NOW !” they said. Smoke from the fires is affecting the entire Bay Area. PG&E, the state's bankrupt electric utility, said it would be cutting power to 940,000 homes and businesses in 38 counties, which means an estimated 2.35 million people. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the Kincade Fire. Almost 1,000 firefighters were at work building additional containment lines. The fire is just 11% contained after three days and has burned about 26,000 acres.

Extreme winds continue to blow. California Health and Human Services has established a hotline for medically vulnerable residents and health facilities. Departures from Oakland and Alameda to Pier 41 on the Bay Ferry have been canceled due to “severe” wind conditions. Interstate-80 was closed in both directions. The governor declared a statewide emergency due to “unprecedented” high winds that have led to the Kincade Fire and Tick Fire in Southern California.
