An old woman fell to death Tuesday inside the Grand Canyon Park

She has died after falling over the canyon’s rim inside the park. Her body was recovered approximately 200 feet below the rim. The woman’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin. Last year, 17 people died inside Grand Canyon National Park. Tuesday’s accident was the fifth death inside the park this year. The last two deaths were in the same week. On March 26, a person died inside the park near the South Rim, but that was not a fall, and the death is still under investigation. The park encourages visitors to be aware of their actions. They must stay on designated trails and walkways, always keep a safe distance from the edge of the rim and stay behind railings and fences at overlooks.

Grand Canyon National Park received last year more than 6 million recreational visits. Grand Canyon National Park is located in northwestern Arizona. The park  covers 1,217,262 acres (1,901.972 sq mi; 4,926.08 km2). The primary public areas of the park are the South and North Rims, and adjacent areas of the canyon itself. The South Rim is more accessible than the North Rim, and accounts for 90% of park visitation. The Grand Canyon was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.
