A dramatic incident happened at about 8 p.m. Saturday along a multiple-block stretch of Esplanade Ave, in New Orleans.
A driver hit a total of eight people between the 3400 block and the 3200 block of Esplanade Avenue. Photographs of the scene showed mangled bikes along the side of the street.Two people, a man and a woman both about 30 years old were killed and six injured after being struck by the vehicle. The injured ranged in age from 28 to 65. Three of the five people brought to the hospital were in critical condition.
After the incident the driver ran to a nearby corner and laid down on the sidewalk where he lost consciousness. Bystanders in the area were the ones who stopped the driver. Later he asked whether he had killed anyone. The suspect had been arrested and charged with nine counts, including two of vehicular homicide. The suspect was tested to determine whether he was intoxicated. His identity was not released. Authorities investigating the incident gathered footage from security cameras.The incident happened not far from the Endymion parade, one of the city's biggest Mardi Gras parades.
