A driver intentionally plowed into a family in Rockland County


He intentionally drove into the group after being asked to not smoke in front of the kids. “His cigarette smoke was in the vicinity of the family and it seems to be the catalyst,” Haverstraw Police Capt. Martin Lund told .A 32-year-woman was killed. Her 35-year-old husband and a 2-year-old child were rushed to Westchester Medical Center with serious injuries. The other children . ranging in age from a few months to 10 years old , were treated at Montefiore Nyack Hospital in Rockland.The driver, identified as 35-year-old Jason Mendez of Washingtonville, New York, was arrested.


He refused to drop a knife he was holding and police had to tase him. Mendez was charged of second-degree murder and seven counts of second-degree attempted murder and pleaded not guilty to all charges. Mendez has a criminal record in Texas. He is being held at the Rockland County jail. Mendez’s attorney said in court his client just lost cellphone repair job a week ago. “The investigation is still ongoing and it is anticipated that several additional charges will be filed,” police said in a Facebook post.
