Monozygotic or identical twins occur when a single egg is fertilized to form one zygote which then divides into two separate embryos. Monozygotic twinning occurs in birthing at a rate of about 3 in every 1000 deliveries worldwide (that means (about 0.3% of the world population). Identical twins do not have the same fingerprints however.
