The FBI, state police and Hartford bomb squads responded to the hospita where the incident occurred. They went also to the man’s home at 66 Milardo Lane. When asked whether the incident is being investigating as a possible act of terrorism, Drew said officials are not speculating what the man’s motives may have been.
Some sources identified the man as Steven Ellam, a Middletown resident with a criminal record that dates back at least nine years. He was sentenced to 33 months in prison for an attack on a woman in June 2013 in Middletown and he pleaded guilty to first-degree strangulation, interfering with police officers, and violating probation. In 2010, Ellam was charged with assaulting his father. After the actual incident, Police Chief William McKenna said police have had contact with the person before, but would not elaborate. Hartford HealthCare has increased security at its emergency departments as a precaution, spokesperson Shawn Mawhiney said in a statement.
