Massive pile-up of 70 cars in a fatal crash in Iowa, Monday

A 70-car fatal crash occurred in Iowa Monday due to the snowstorm. Seven people, including two teenage sisters, were killed. At least 10 people were injured in addition.  The “Dancing with the Stars” touring cast was part of a 70-car pile-up in Iowa Monday, but everyone made it out safe.

It’s unclear who was on the bus, but pros Keo Motsepe, Emma Slater, Artem Chigvinstev, Sharna Burgess, Gleb Savchenko, Lindsay Arnold and Alan Bersten are on the tour, as well as troupe members Jenna Johnson, Hayley Erbert, Brandon Armstrong and Sasha Farber. Dozens vehicles were damaged. The winter storm blanketed parts of the state with up to 8 inches of snow. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service recorded 5.4 inches of snow at the Des Moines International Airport, snapping a record 769-day stretch without 3 inches or more of snowfall in the city.


The most snow fell in Wapello, which saw 8.5 inches. The road remained closed into Monday evening between 13th Street and U.S. 30 in Ames near mile marker 116, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. State Patrol responded to 185 crashes from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday throughout Iowa. While the snowfall was predicted to end by late Monday, it also was forecast to start again Tuesday evening, dropping between 1 and 3 inches, the worst expected along or to the south of Interstate 80.
