A shooting occurred at Salvador Castro Middle School in the Westlake District, Los Angeles , on Thursday morning. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the head and is in "critical but stable" condition. A girl, 15, was shot in the wrist. Three others, an 11-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman suffered minor injuries, according police. They where not shot.
The Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles School Police and District leadership immediately responded. The victims were transported to a local hospital. The shooter was a 12-year-old student girl. She was arrested and the gun was seized.. Authorities were also investigating how the individual was able to access the gun. The school was put in lockdown for the day.

Authorities have not released a suspected motive for the shooting. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who were hurt in today's shooting incident", Interim Superintendent for the Los Angeles Unified School District Vivian Ekchian said in a statement. She added the school district is "providing appropriate supports to those who may be impacted by the incident". Classes are expected to resume as normal once the lockdown is lifted, and counselors will be on campus to assist the students impacted by what the school police chief described as a "traumatic" incident. A hotline has been set up for parents of students at Sal Castro Middle School. The school has about 365 students in grades 6-8 and almost all are Hispanic and many from low-income families.
Police said the shooting was an accidental discharge of the firearm.
