, a 2008 volleyball Olympic silver medalist with the USA team, was attacked by a man with a metal object outside a Los Angeles restaurant on the last weekend. The attacker fractured her eye socket. She has injuries to her eye, nose and cheek. “He had something in his hand on the other side of the car in the street and he just kind of looked at me with some pretty hateful eyes and as I turned to go tell my friend, ‘I think something’s wrong with him, I think he’s gonna hit the car,’ before I knew it, a big metal bolt, like a pipe, hit me in my eye. Hit me here, here. It happened so fast,” she remembered. Her friends and strangers held down the suspect until the police arrived. He was identified by police as Semeon Tesfamariam, 51, and taken in custody. He was booked on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon and is being held without bail.

USA Volleyball President and CEO Jamie Davis said Monday that the organization was “appalled” by the attack.
