at about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Reno, between August 27 – September 4 at the temporary Black Rock City, built in desert. The event takes its name from its culmination, the symbolic ritual burning of a large wooden effigy (“the Man”) that traditionally occurs on the Saturday evening of the event.” Burning Man isn’t your usual festival. It’s a city wherein almost everything that happens is created entirely by its citizens, who are active participants in the experience”, the organizers say at the official website. 70,000 thousand people gathered in the dessert for the iconic festival.
Man into the fire during festival
During the festival, participants become citizens and help build and maintain the temporary city, which even has its own airport. This year’s festival theme was Radical Ritual, with organizers inviting participants to celebrate “the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime.” Elon Musk, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Google’s Larry Page and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook joined in the past the unconventional and extreme Burning Man festival. This year, Saturday night, during the ceremony of burning a giant wooden man-shaped construct, a tragic incident occurred: a man, festival-goer, ran straight into the flames. He had to dodge a number of rangers and law enforcement personnel in order to reach the fire, which stretches approximately 50 feet into the air. Black Rock City fire personnel rescued him from the fire and he was sent to hospital in critical condition.
