A shooting occurred outside of Sprowl Funeral & Cremation Care funeral home in Indianapolis just two blocks away from Barnes United Methodist Church, on Saturday afternoon. The shooting began in the parking lot after an altercation. A 4-year-old girl is in critical condition at Riley Hospital for Children. She was as part of a group attending a funeral.A 16-year-old girl and an adult male with gunshot wounds were also transported to a hospital. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department also received reports of two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds who went to a local hospital for treatment and are in stable condition. Police believe a man got out of a vehicle, approached a vehicle in a narrow parking lot next to the funeral home, and an argument began. Investigators believe only one shooter was involved.
The suspect left the scene prior to the officer’s arrival. No shots were believed to have been fired inside the funeral home. The person being memorialized at the funeral was not a crime victim in Indianapolis. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett in a statment asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the authorities. The Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit corporation, says Saturday’s crime was the eighth mass shooting in Indianapolis and the 11th in Indiana in 2021.
