Unfinished building engulfed in flames, big fire in the Oakland area


A large crane dangled over the blaze, threatening to possibly collapse of the building at 2302 Valdez St. Small explosions were heard. Firefighters attacked the blaze using a ‘surround and drown’ tactic. Images from live television broadcasts showed firefighters using multiple ladder trucks to attack the blaze near Lake Merritt.

Fire crews were also monitoring the rooftops of nearby buildings. Several hundred residents were evacuated from nearby buildings. Many stood on the streets outside the burning structure in their pajamas. Evacuees have been taken to Cathedral of Christ the Light on Harrison Street and Grand Avenue. The project known as Alta Waverly was under construction designed to host 225 apartments and 2,300 square feet of retail space, including also an underground parking garage. It was nearing completion in early 2018. The building was part of the Broadway Valdez Specific Plan district  Fortunately, no injuries were reported. By 7:30 a.m., firefighters appeared to have the flames knocked down, but the gutted structure was still smouldering. It was the latest big, devastating blaze to hit the area. Heat from the fire was detected on a weather satellite in space. The temperature of the fire reached nearly 900 degrees kelvin.
