It was an official announcement about a new task force, the “Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force”. Eddie Johnson , the city’s police superintendent, described it: “This new strike force will significantly help our police officers stem the flow of illegal guns and create a culture of accountability for the small subset of individuals and gangs who disproportionally drive violence in our city.” “Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. 1714 shootings in Chicago this year!” the American President also wrote on Twitter on Friday morning.

Chicago had 762 homicides last year, more than the combined gun-related death toll in New York and Los Angeles, the only two larger American cities. Harsher penalties and prosecutions for people accused of gun crimes and homicides were expected in Chicago. The Justice Department had previously said that more than 20 additional ATF agents were sent to Chicago. More, the department was also considering reallocating prosecutors to the city. One of the actual goals of the authorities is to control how guns come in the city and to stop the illegal ways.
