Law enforcement officials spent the next several hours rounding up dozens of pigs. A group of animals one group strolled around half a mile away. Several pigs died in the crash. The stretch of highway was quickly closed off by police both sides between Pleasant Run and Belt Line roads.
Pigs on the highway
Traffic was diverted onto the north and south service roads. It was not immediately clear when the highway would reopen or what the cause of the crash or condition of the driver was. Details about the crash haven’t been released. Many drivers who was stopped on the highway twitted about the incident. “This is unreal…. I-45 SHUT DOWN in Wilmer.. Big rig that crashed was carrying pigs” one of them said. Many others accidents involving release of animals previously occurred.. In Ohio in 2015, hundreds of piglets were set free following a semitrailer crash, closing down the highway for eight hours. And two years ago in New York, 15 buffaloes escaped from a farm and made their way onto a State Thruway. Those are dangerous situations both for animals and humans because especially on the highways fatalities can occur.
