Two people, both men, were critically injured in Tuesday morning near Fort Detrick in Maryland after a Navy Hospital Corpsman opened fire. Personnel on the Army base had shot and killed the suspect, a 38-year-old man. He was a medic.The injured were flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore where they remain in critical condition. In a statement, Fort Detrick officials said, “Fort Detrick Police have neutralized an active shooter situation involving an armed gunman and medical lifesaving procedures were initiated. The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene. police didn’t publicly identify the gunman.”
Police would not say how or if the suspect knew the victims but the U.S. Navy said sailors were involved. Several public schools in the area were placed on a brief lockdown. Frederick County Community College was also placed on lockdown. The incident caused traffic delays in the area. Both the FBI and ATF Baltimore were on the scene to help with the investigation as well as the Maryland State Police. Governor Larry Hogan tweeted „I want to thank the federal, state, and local law enforcement officials for responding swiftly to the incident this morning in Frederick. We are keeping the victims in our prayers and Maryland State Police will continue to assist in the investigation.” Fort Detrick and Frederick police are investigating the incident.
