Police arrested about 100 as crowds gathered in Miami Beach

About 100 people have been arrested as spring break crowds gathered in Florida’s over the weekend ignoring pandemic rules. This included some for the seizure of weapons and drugs. Police attempted to break up a group of about 200 or more people who were blocking a roadway, drinking with open containers and smoking what appeared to be marijuana. Many of them were college students. Two police officers were injured and sent to hospital. Police used pepper balls to disperse the crowd. This year Covid-19 protocols made the task of policing the crowds twice as hard. Florida is a popular spring break destination, and some of its beaches have been packed. “We’re seeing too much spring break activity,” Mayor Dan Gelber told media. “We’ve got a problem with too many people coming here.”

It’s difficult to ensure social distancing on the beach. The Florida Department of Health reported 1,973,109 Covid-19 cases Saturday, an increase of 5,167 cases since Friday. The state’s health department website shows that a majority of the new cases were from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Videos and photos posted to social media websites, including Snapchat’s public Snap Map, showed large, maskless crowds drinking and dancing over the weekend in Miami. In Miami Beach, tourists are receiving cellphone messages warning, “Vacation Responsibly or Be Arrested.”
