A shooter opened fire at a party in the 6700-block of South South Chicago Avenue, killing two people and injuring many others early Sunday morning on the South Side. 15 people were struck by gunfire. The victims ages range from 20 to 44 years old. Some were in critical condition. The total number of victims represents an increase from an earlier police statement that had said 12 people were shot. The number of fatalities has not changed. “A disturbance occurred among several patrons and gunfire erupted striking multiple people,” officer Jose Jara said. There appeared to be a pool of blood on the sidewalk near the door of the building. The shooting was one of the most violent, in terms of number of people hurt, in recent Chicago memory.
The Fire Department called an EMS Plan 3, which automatically dispatches 15 ambulances, a district chief, media affairs, the chief paramedic, trucks and engines. „It was a chaotic scene when paramedics began doing triage,” Fire District Chief Juan Hernandez said. Detectives are questioning a person of interest, police said. Area One detectives are investigating. So far this year, officers have responded to 393 shooting incidents across the city through March 7, according to police statistics. That’s a 31% increase over the same period last year.
