Another person who was in the dock was injured. He was sent to to a hospital in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A dark smoke spread in the area. Firefighters at the scene not only brought the fire under control but tried to limit local pollution stopping spread of the fuel on the water. A failure to vent the hold before starting the engine is believed but the exact cause of the blast was not yet determined. An unconfirmed source said the owner of the boat made a mistake placing the gas pump into a rod holder. According to the same source, a Sea Tow worker, the blast was initiated by a spark from the battery. After the blast, the boat was totally destroyed.
