The Federal Aviation Administration website listed a ground stop for the airport, known by the three-letter code MCO. During the incident roads to Orlando International were temporarily closed. Massive traffic backups on the airport roads took place. Hundreds of officers from several Central Florida agencies swarmed the airport but they realized that was a person in mental distress. A crisis negotiator spoke with the suspect, police said. In fact, it was proved that the man had a fake gun. He was crying “shoot me, shoot me” before he was taken into custody. The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Michael Wayne Pettigrew, who served as a Marine from 2009-2012. “You’re not going to prison, Michael, you’re going to the hospital,” he was told. However Pettigrew will face a charge of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer.
