Three people were killed and 10 others injured by a tornado in coastal North Carolina, fueled by a major winter storm. The tornado hit the Ocean Ridge Plantation area in Brunswick County, North Carolina, Monday night. Several homes were destroyed and several others were “severely” damaged. “It’s something like I have never seen before. A lot of destruction. It’s going to be a long recovery process,” Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram said during a news conference early Tuesday after the tornado. Tornadoes also occurred in other areas, in Florida and Georgia. Homes were destroyed and one person was injured in Damascus, Georgia. Three people were injured in Panama City Beach, Florida. High winds also caused damage in Lake City.
The severe weather was the result of Winter Storm Uri. It dumped snow and ice on parts of the South, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Millions of Texans are waking up without power. Nearly 4 million homes and businesses were without power early Tuesday in Texas. Two men were found dead along Houston-area roadways. Tuesday morning, more than 200 locations along roads in the Houston area were covered with ice and “not safe for travel,” according to the Texas Department of Transportation. In Kentucky, two people died in separate crashes Monday. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency also reported two weather-related deaths.
