The Coast Guard brought a team of scientists from New England Aquarium in order to take samples from the dead whale and examine it in a laboratory. A necropsy was also planned.

Officer Robert Simpson declared to the press that the dead whale was beached in the middle of Boston Harbor until their investigation is over. After first checking the finback whale pressure lines and bruising was spotted around the whale. This could indicate that the whale might have been trapped by having something wrapped around it.

The finback whale, also called the fin whale, is the second largest species of whale. It can reach a length of up to 26m and a weight of up to 70 tones.
