One male deputy and one female deputy of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were “ambushed” while sitting in a patrol vehicle in the city of Compton, Calif., on Saturday. Both deputies “sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical condition” the department said. The suspect it is at large. The incident occurred at the Metro Blue Line station in Compton, close to the Compton sheriff’s station. The police shared footage of the incident on Twitter. Video of the incident appears to show an individual in dark clothing walking up to the deputies’ car, firing a gun into the car and running away. Both deputies sustained multiple gunshot wounds. They underwent surgery.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a late-night news conference that the two graduated from the sheriff’s training academy about 14 months ago. “One is a 31-year-old mother of a 6-year-old boy,” he said. “The other is a 24-year-old.”The search for the suspect is underway. Investigators have a description of a vehicle that fled the scene. The attack came amid a backdrop of nationwide protests against police after the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May.
