A massive fire produced collapse of bridge on Interstate 85, circulation blocked


The fire occurred near the city’s busy Piedmont Road and just south of Georgia 400. A bridge collapsed. All five lanes of the highway in each direction were blocked . There were no injuries. Many drivers were stuck in the area for hours. DeKalb County schools cancel class for Friday. The district has determined that it will not be able to transport students to and from school efficiently given the transportation events this evening. State and city offices will delay opening until 10:00 a.m.An estimated 250,000 vehicles drive daily through that stretch of I-85, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. FBI says this is not a criminal act and the fire was an accident. The fire is still being put out and will be investigated. Inspectors were waiting for chance to inspect the freeway. Is too early to say how long it will take to repair the highway. “It certainly can take anywhere from several weeks to several months,” Reginald DesRoches, a professor at Georgia Tech University, said.
