Special security measures in Times Square for the New Years Eve celebration


7,000 officers, specially armed counterterrorism units and bomb-sniffing dogs are also in place. The New York police studied terrorist events which occurred worldwide in planning their Times Square security. Officials said they didn’t know of any terror threats now. On Time Square carrying umbrellas and large bags is prohibited. As in the past years, officials have removed trash bins and mailboxes, sealed manhole covers and done sweeps of parking garages and hotels. During the New Year event the ball descends 141 feet (43 m) in 60 seconds. The event was first organized by Adolph Ochs, owner of The New York Times newspaper, on December 31, 1907. It missed only in 1942 and 1943.The ball’s design has also been updated over the years to reflect improvements in lighting technology.
