24 people injured Thursday in a fire in a New York City apartment building

Nine people escaped to the roof to wait out the fire and were safely removed. Between the residents in the building there were medical residents and doctors affiliated with Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital. A woman who lived in the apartment where the fire started was able to get out of the building safely. More than two dozens other people were injured. Six are in serious condition. It’s unclear what caused the fire which was extinguished about 6:30 p.m. Nearly 170 firefighters battled the fire. In a press conference on site, FDNY Chief of Department James Leonard said “We are still making our final searches around the building, a lot of people are sheltered in place. Some people are complaining of smoke inhalation, but we think everybody has been accounted for, but the operation does continue as we speak.”
