The woman confessed that she’s been “enchanted with giant pumpkins” since she was a little girl. Tobeck made her first attempt in 1977, when she said she grew a 500-pound pumpkin. She now dedicated 7,000 square feet to grow giant pumpkins. The Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off attracts growers from around the United States. The weigh-off is held the Monday prior to the festival which includes also a costume contest, pumpkin carving, games, and a pie eating contest. Food offerings include pumpkin such as pie, pancakes, bread, cheesecake, sausages, and ice cream. Local coastal favorites include Brussels sprouts, artichoke hearts, and Portuguese linguisa sandwiches. The Great Pumpkin Parade features the weigh-off champion pumpkin. The popular event attracts more than 20,000 people. After the festival, the pumpkin will be transported to the Bellagio in Las Vegas, where it will be carved and put on display for Halloween.
