Whitaker was supposed to drop the toddler to the daycare just after he dropped his 5-year-old daughter off at school. However, Whitaker got back home to study for a promotional test for the Hillsborough County Fire Department. He reportedly totally forgot about his son Lawson Whitaker who was left alone, locked in the hot burning car for eight hours.

Whitaker only realized his mistake by accident very late when he got back to the car and saw his son lying unconscious in the seat behind the driver’s side seat. He tried to give him CPR, but it was unfortunately too late as his son was already blue and not breathing anymore. He called 911 and the boy, who was rushed to a nearby hospital was pronounced dead. Troy Whitaker was arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter
