To date, President Obama has granted 562 commutations: more commutations than the previous nine presidents combined and more commutations than any individual president in nearly a century. Some commutations were conditioned by additional drug treatment. For others, the President has commuted their sentences to a significantly reduced term. The basic idea was to give a second chance to the eligible persons. Both the House and the Senate are asked to continue to work on a bipartisan basis to get a criminal justice reform bill. White House counsel Neil Eggleston says Obama will continue granting clemency to more inmates during the final months of his presidency.
