Kelci Lewis suffered severe head trauma and “major internal organ damage,” the police said. Kelci was left alone that night in the home with five other children, ages 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8. The mother and another adult were reportedly gone from 11:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. The 6-year-old in the house was able to tell authorities what happened. The Birmingham Police Department has never charged someone so young with murder before and Alabama does not allow children to be tried as adults until they are 14. “This is one of the most heartbreaking investigations that I have seen in over 30 years of my law enforcement career,” said Birmingham police Chief A.C. Roper. Katerra Lewis, the mother,26, is charged with manslaughter. She was released from police custody for a $15,000 bond. The case will be difficult in justice.
