The very first reports from local news outlets suggested that the light could have been the result of a meteor shower. “Giant blue light from this plane/rocket/ship over San Francisco. Lit up the sky.” read one of the tweets. However, these and other claims have been dismissed after a Navy spokesperson. It was explained that what the people have seen was the result of Navy missile which was fired in the Pacific from a submarine.

The missile test that took place in coastal Southern California produced the bright light in the sky which resulted in a burst of blue light. This raised suspicions in regards to what really generated this phenomenon. Similar sightings were reported when the US armed services conduct exercises in local airspace. FAA and the armed services do not want to disclose the specific nature of such exercises besides giving just an acknowledgement that it happened.
