Freddie Gray, 25, was arrested for possessing a switch blade knife outside the Gilmor Homes housing project on Baltimore’s west side..The grand jury had brought a range of charges against all six officers and had affirmed the most serious charge against the van driver, Officer Caesar R. Goodson Jr., of second-degree depraved-heart murder. The death of the yping black man a week after he suffered a spinal cord injury brought to tensions between the police and poor neighborhoods in this majority-black city, augmented by rioting and looting. Prosecutors argued that Gray was illegally arrested well before the officers knew that he possessed a knife, and without probable cause. Public reaction in this case has drawn parallels to the response to the 2014 of Michael Brown, as part of a larger string of controversial uses of force by police officers in the United States. especially against African Americans
