Daniel McDonald, a homeless liaison officer, managed to help him to obtain a temporary State of Florida ID card, to order his birth record from the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs and finally to get access to his bank account. The homeless man was receiving than enough in monthly pension payments to have enough to pay for rent for a modest apartment and food without having to work., according to officer Daniel McDonald. “We’re uniformed cops with police cars, but we want homeless people to trust us. Our job is not to arrest someone. It’s to help them. Homeless people are still accountable to the law, but they’re now starting to see we can be trusted, and this new model and field of policing is gaining popularity very quickly, I think,” he said.
