The bus was carrying 12 inmates and three corrections officers. It was headed to El Paso. In fact, eight prisoners and two corrections officers were killed in the accident. Third correctional staff member and four offenders were transported with injuries at Medical Center Hospital. The two Union Pacific employees on the train were not injured in the accident but at least two cars of the train were damaged. Brad Livingston, executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice expressed condolences to the bereaved families. “It’s with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident,” he said. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued a statement with a similar content.
