The recall affects popular chains like Costco and Trader Joe’s, also Food 4 Less, Foods Co. and Ralphs, even Walmart, hundreds of stores around the country. The voluntary recall of fruit shipped between June 1 and July 12 is made on grocery stores across the nation. The recall also applies to baked goods that were made using peaches, nectarines and plums from Wawona Packing Co. For the instant only the contamination was discovered as a result of internal company testing and no illnesses were reported. Listeria can cause flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, nausea and diarrhea. It is a dangerous bacteria. The death rate is about 20 percent, particularly affecting children and the elderly. Listeria is also a cause of miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant women. New tests are now negative for any bacteria, including listeria, at Wawona Packing Co., after cleaning its facilities. Consumers with questions can contact Wawona Packing Co. at (888) 232-9912.
