A big gas explosion killed and injured people in East Harlem


A big fire was on the scene. Nearly 200 firefighters from 44 units responded. Two women were killed in the explosion and at least 55 people, including children, were injured. Two of them had life threatening injuries. More than 12 people remain missing. Trained dogs were assisting in the search for survivors. A Spanish Christian Church was located on the ground floor of one of the collapsed buildings. It’ unclear if people were inside at the moment of explosion.
The residents reported hearing a loud explosion and the first call to 911 was at 9:31 a.m.  Before the explosion, gas odor at the 1652 Park Avenue was reported at 9:13 by a resident to the utility Consolidated Edison. The intervention crews were dispatched after two minutes but before their arrival the explosion occurred.
The FBI appreciated that no indication of terror or crime was found. The Metro North rail service was suspended to and from the New York City.
“This is a tragedy of the worst kind because there was no indication in time to save people”, said the New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
