More than 50 people were injured (the exact number fluctuated from different sources). Eight passengers needed immediate medical attention. Five people between 50 and 80 were taken by helicopter to the LA County USC Medical Center.
The circumstances that caused the accident were not yet clarified but investigations will be made. Witnesses from the scene declared that they saw the bus brake hard in the far left lane. It was estimated that the bus was going with about 70 miles an hour.
Many drivers stopped their cars and helped the victims after the accident occurred. As an added consequence, the entire freeway was temporarily closed in both directions.
