Scientifically explained, a sinkhole occurs when below the ground’s surface soft limestone dissolves and collapses. A sinkhole (or doline) is a natural depression or hole in Earth’s surface. These may be formed gradually or suddenly. Because this can occur worldwide, the name given may be different: “sink holes”, “black holes” or “blue holes” in the Bahamas, “cenotes” in the Yucatan Peninsula, “sotanos” in Mexico, “tomo” in New Zealand or “tiankengs” in China.
Unfortunately, people in Florida know this anomaly as being particularly frequent in the Tampa Bay area. This year, in March, in Seffner, Fla., an entire home with his owner sleeping inside was absorbed by a sinkhole.
