Obama yesterday called Harris and apologized for the remarks which caused a distraction and was misconstrued by a majority of people. Jay Carney, White House press secretary, told reporters that the president spoke to Harris after the trip and apologized for the remarks. He also added that Harris and Obama are old and good friends and that Obama had not intended to anyway diminish Harris’s capabilities and professional accomplishments.
Obama made the remarks when commenting on Harris’s accomplishments. He praised her for being the first woman as well as Indian-American elected as California’s attorney general. Obama said, “She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country.” This is not the first time Obama has come under fire for sexist remarks, in 2008 he called a reporter ‘sweetie’ during a press briefing.
