Although Owen was an experienced hiker, Mounted Hood was a real challenge for her especially considering the fact that she had her ankle injured. The woman initially planned her trip as a one day hike at 4600 feet. It all went wrong when she was suddenly scared by a whiteout.

The woman wanted to head back but she slipped and injured her ankle. At an elevation of nearly 4600 feet with no food and in rough conditions Mary Owen would have been a goner if not for an email that she sent to a friend about her hike up on Mount Hood.

The search began on Thursday night but rescuers weren’t able to find the woman until Saturday morning.
