Senator Marco Rubio, while giving his republican response, urged the president to desist from his obsession of increasing taxes. Obama on the other hand said that the task of his generation is to ensure that the American economic growth is reignited in order to create a middle class that is thriving. During the address that lasted for an hour, he said that the union is growing stronger and they have managed to clear the rubble left behind by crisis. He said that their efforts will be guided by delivery of jobs and growth.
He added that the plans he has will not increase the current deficit in any way and proposed reforms to be carried out for the purpose of cutting down on Medicare costs while arguing that they cannot make any cuts towards prosperity. During his speech, he also called for federal investment into clean energy, education and infrastructure.
