More than 100 people were shot in Chicago over the Father's Day weekend. At least 14 of them including children died, marking the most violent weekend in the city this year.
Several shootings occurred early Monday morning. The youngest victim was a 3-year-old who was heading home from a barbershop with his father. "These kids are not criminals," Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said, referring to some of the children shot. They are not gang members. „They have nothing to do with the ongoing disputes out there and they just get gunned down for no reason at all," he added. A 64-year-old woman was sitting inside her home when she was struck by gunfire in the arm.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot also addressed the violence on Twitter. Crime in Chicago has been tracked by the Chicago Police Department's Bureau of Records since the beginning of the 20th century. The violent crime rate, in this city is higher than the US average and the reasons for this remain unclear. However, Chicago is considered the most gang-infested city in the United States. As many as 70 active and inactive Chicago street gangs with 753 factions have been identified.
