A horrific accident occurred Saturday evening at about 8pm on a residential road near a golf club in Oatlands, Sydney west.
Four children riding bicycles, all under the age of 12, believed to be from the Maronite Christian community, were killed and anothe, with a critical head injury, was in critical condition. Three of the children killed were siblings. Two others were taken to hospital with minor injuries. They were hit by an out-of-control 4WD Mitsubishi in Sydney's north-west. The 29 year old driver was arrested. He was positive at the alcohol test. He had a 24 old passenger. Officers from The Hills Police Area Command established a crime scene. "When the first crews arrived on scene they were met with carnage, a very, very difficult scene with a lot of chaos," NSW Ambulance Acting Superintendent Andrew McAlpine said.
He specified that approximately 18 paramedics and a number of doctors attended after receiving reports of “a number of pedestrians hit by a vehicle”. It’s very, very difficult for police, fire rescue, paramedics to be confronted with such chaos and such carnage,” he added. An investigation has commenced into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
