Several orcas rescued from a beach in Argentina

It was a six hours difficult operation. About 150 people, which mostly included volunteers from the area as well as city workers, firefighters and marine biologists, came to help. A seven orca, the biggest, has died. The whales are weighing between three and four tons. At least two rescuers had to stop rescuing the whales and needed to be treated for hypothermia. It was unclear why the orcas had beached themselves.

The town’s tourism secretary Flavia Laguné said they did not appear to be ill. Some possible answers are expected from the necropsy of the died orca. The killer whale or orca (Orcinus orca) is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family. They have been known to attack baleen whale calves, and even adult whales. Killer whales are highly social. Killer whales are not considered a threat to humans, but there have been cases of captive orcas killing or injuring their handlers at marine theme parks.
