Jewel Changi Airport opened and is very different

On Thursday, Singapore opened the doors to Jewel Changi Airport with four terminals and a lot of other things to consider.

This is something not existing in another part of the world. Stretching 10 storeys high the complex spans over 137,000 square meters to connect terminals one, two and three to a central hub. The facade is supported by a ring of 14 treelike columns and specialised glass material to create light while reducing heat. The astronomical extension, which has been built over an existing carpark, is like another world and a destination for tourists in itself. It’s almost like stepping in to a scene of Jurassic Park. There are 2000 trees and thousands more flowers and shrubs covering the walls. A big waterfall (the rain vortex) is in the center of the dome.

The complex includes a 130-room hotel (YotelAIR) with rooms available for as little as four hours and themed gardens. A Pokemon Center is on Level 4.“Jewel will be a place where Singapore and the world meet,” Mr Lee Seow Hiang, chief executive officer of the Changi Airport Group, said. Unlike airports around the world, the vision for Jewel isn’t just for tourists but it’s designed with the locals in mind. An IMAX movie theatre, more than 200 restaurants, bars and retail outlets,  expect them. According to Changi Airport Group, who along with CapitaLand funded Jewel, the new hub is a necessary step towards making Singapore a multidimensional lifestyle destination.
