A horrific suicide occurred on the La Variante Bridge in the community of Ibague in Tolima, central-western Colombia.
Jessy Paola Moreno Cruz, a 32 old woman who had financial problems and had recently been evicted from her home jumped 330ft (100 meters) to death with her son May Ceballos, 10, in her arms. Both died. Emergency workers were at the scene. A doctor, psychologist, police officers and firefighters spent an hour trying to persuade her to change her mind. The child also begged his mum not to leap from the bridge but she ignored their pleas and jumped.
In August, Cruz shared a picture of herself along with the mood caption: 'Feeling fantastic.' After she was hounded by debt collectors. Ibague mayor Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo told local media: "The incident has a lot to do with the terrible situation we are facing in Ibague and all over Colombia." The mayor said similar circumstances, with people being “extorted, intimidated, blackmailed or threatened with death” was “something that is monstrous and is occurring in Colombia as a whole”. The murder-suicide is currently being investigated further.
