Two people have been hospitalized and another man is dead following a dramatic string of carjackings around southern Sydney on Friday.
A 24-year-old man from Greenacre known to police with "mental health issues" stole a small supermarket delivery truck at Chullora and drove to Rockdale, having "a number of crashes" en route. The stolen car collided with up to five cars in Wiley Park, southwest Sydney, before smashing into several more on West Botany St in nearby Rockdale. One witness described the attacker “was looking crazy and frazzled” before he carjacked a red taxi and fled the scene. He also stabbed a man in his early 20s, who is now in hospital with a serious condition.
Police stopped the man at Arncliffe and he turned the large kitchen knife on himself and stabbed to death. Police and ambulance services had multiple crews on scene and there were reports of helicopters in the area."The offender wasn't trying to intentionally harm people,” police said. Yhere is no indication the matter is terror-related. A critical incident team will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
