There were named four journalists and a newspaper that Time says “are representatives of a broader fight by countless others around the world”. Jamal Khashoggi, the prominent Saudi journalist who was killed, Maria Ressa, a detained Philippine journalist, Reuters journalists Wa Lone, 32, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, who have been jailed in Myanmar and the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Md., where five people were shot and killed at the newspaper’s offices are the choice of Time this year. Four different Time covers feature those journalists from around the world. According to Time, they were chosen “for taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts, for speaking up and for speaking out”.
Time “Person of the Year” covers – 2018
The magazine’s tradition – begun in 1927 as “Man of the Year” – recognises the person who “for better or for worse… has done the most to influence the events of the year”. In 1950 the magazine decided groups, as well as individuals, could be chosen as “Person of the Year”. As a special moment, in 2006, the Person of the Year was simply “You”, with a mirror cover design, reflecting the importance of user-generated internet content.
